  • Graduated from Hahnemann Medical College (Philadelphia, PA) 1974
  • Internship at the Cleveland Clinic 1974-1975
  • Ophthalmology Residency at Mt. Sinai Hospital of Cleveland 1975-1978
  • Returned to Erie 1978 and started to practice Ophthalmology with special interests in:
    • Cataract Surgery and Intraocular Lens Implants
    • Treatment of Diabetic Retinopathy with Argon Laser Photocoagulation
    • Diagnosis and Treatment of Glaucoma

Professional Accomplishments:

1978 (December) - Performed the FIRST MEDICAL LASER TREATMENT in the Erie area. This was performed using an Argon Laser to treat eyes with Diabetic Retinopathy to prevent further retinal hemorrhage.

1979 - FIRST TO PERFORM CATARACT SURGERY WITH INTRAOCULAR LENS IMPLANTS at Hamot Medical Center and St. Vincent Medical Center.

1979 - Performed FIRST CLOSED SYSTEM VITRECTOMY IN ERIE at Hamot Medical Center for evacuation of intraocular hemorrhage from proliferative diabetic retinopathy.

1980 - Performed FIRST POSTERIOR CHAMBER LENS IMPLANTS for cataract patients in the Erie area - this began a revolution in lens implant surgery that greatly enhanced the value and safety of cataract surgery with lens implants.

1981 - Performed the FIRST ARGON LASER TRABECULOPLASTY in the Erie area for the treatment of glaucoma. This in-office procedure was the mainstay of glaucoma laser treatment for the next 20 years, until it was replaced by SLT or Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty in 2001 (see 2001 below).

1983 - Became one of 30 clinical investigators in the United States to use the YAG LASER for TREATMENT OF SECONDARY CATARACTS (same as cloudy posterior capsules) and introduced this procedure to the Erie area.

1991 - Introduced MICRO or SMALL INCISION CATARACT SURGERY to Erie using FOLDABLE LENS IMPLANTS - thus greatly reducing the healing time after cataract surgery and eliminating any development of astigmatism afterwards.

1999 - Introduced new modality of glaucoma testing to Erie using NERVE FIBER ANALYSIS or GDx TESTING. This method allows physicians to diagnose glaucoma by evaluating the optic nerve fiber layer of the retina. By this method, glaucoma can be diagnosed at a much earlier time and, thus, prevent damage from glaucoma more readily.

2001 - Introduced to Erie, the FIRST USE OF SELECTIVE LASER TRABECULOPLASTY (SLT) for the in-office laser treatment of glaucoma. This replaced the older method of Argon Laser Trabeculoplasty and has a higher success rate of response.

2003 - Introduced to Erie, the FIRST USE OF ENDOSCOPIC LASER TRABECULOPLASTY (ECP) for the outpatient treatment of advanced glaucoma.

2004 - Introduced REFRACTIVE LENS IMPLANT SURGERY to the Erie area for patients with myopia (nearsightedness) or hyperopia (farsightedness) who seek to reduce their need for glasses or contacts but are reluctant to have CORNEA REFRACTIVE SURGERY (LASIK).

1980 - 1990 Medical Director, Greater Erie Eye Bank - Erie, PA

1982-1995 Chief, Division of Ophthalmology - Hamot Medical Center - Erie, PA
